Bike trail College Park MD

Have you ever watched someone who looks much older than you, riding along the trail with all the ease of a seasoned athlete? They’re smiling and chatting to their partner as they pedal along without a care in the world. You know that they are getting to see so much more than you, a mere walker. Have you ever wondered how they get to be so ‘fit’? Truth is that those people aren’t necessarily ‘fit’ – yes, they’ve spent a little bit of time on their bikes, and their legs are used to turning the pedals, but most of them aren’t on some sort of training regime. They’re just ordinary people like you and me who’ve learned to ride for pleasureIf you ever rode a bike when you were young but haven’t done so for a long time, then remember the old adage: you never forget how to ride a bike. It’s true, all those simple things about balance and steering that you learned as a kid will come straight back to you. And if you do take the plunge and get yourself a new bike, then you’ll realize that todays machines are so much better than anything you will have ridden when you were younger; they’re better made, more comfortable, the brakes work properly, they will almost certainly have plenty of gears to choose from to suit the terrain – so no more wide spaced three-speeders that always felt like you were in the wrong gear.

The health benefits don’t really need to be mentioned because they are largely obvious; more fresh air, more vitamin D, more healthy heart rate, better sleep – and, of course, a little better muscle tone!

The hardest thing, however, is getting started. It all looks like hard work – I promise it won’t be. Try renting or borrowing a bike first. The first couple of rides – keep them short – will be a bit of surprise. Keep it easy, stay on the flat, and just get used to riding the bike again. It won’t take long for your body to get excited about the increased activity and, apart from just feeling better about yourself, you will start to look forward to getting out and going that little bit further. It’s a strange feeling – it’s caused by the body releasing chemicals called endorphins, which lift your mood a bit like caffeine does. Yes, the longer the ride, the happier you’ll be.

If you have an existing health problem that you think might prevent you from getting on a bicycle, then consider an e-bike. These advanced machines are not cheap, but they offer electrical power assistance (you have to keep pedaling to get the assistance!) to make things a little easier. But, remember, if you’re really concerned about your health, then speak to a medical professional first – in the majority of cases, they will say that any activity will be good for you; just don’t overdo it.

Everyone knows how good outdoor activities are for us, but for those of us who’ve not experienced it for a while, we will sometimes need a bit of a kick to get us started. Go on, treat yourself to a little pleasure, go for a ride on a bike, and surprise yourself at just how much fun it can be!
